Adapting to an Ever-Changing World

Molly has been an active participant in her Self-Directed  Services program for over 6 years now. This has been a blessing for a young lady whose challenges necessitate ongoing  modifications  in her everyday life. She has been afforded an opportunity to sample numerous experiences outside the home, all with a common  theme –   her love of animals and all things outdoors. This included volunteering at Oregon Ridge Nature Center and  various animal shelters over the years.

Then came the COVID-19 pandemic. While this has impacted everyone in some shape or form, it has really rocked the world of individual dealing with life’s  challenges. . Routines that were just that.. routine have been altered or greatly limited by the reality of local/state restrictions and the need for social distancing.

Rather than withdraw and potentially lose the gains obtained  through self-direction, Molly and her  team has adapted once again,  this time working on becoming more self-sufficient,   starting  a new routine to allow for  continued opportunities for Molly to grow, both figuratively and literally. Molly and her supporters  began to plant vegetables in raised beds and prepare baked  goods for  “Molly’s Farmers’ Market” held every Saturday between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM.  Molly participates in   the planting, maintenance of the gardens, cultivation and cooking throughout the week and is present, wearing her mask and keeping her distance,  to promote sales  each and every Saturday.  She has now found a new purpose and something to look forward to.

It’s unclear what direction the Farmers’ Market will take, but for now  it’s the latest adaptation that Self-Direction has provided during these most difficult times. Molly’s journey will continue to adapt with the help of her Self-Directed Services team. .
